“Startling Stats 6.0” Show No Signs of Border Crisis Slowing Down
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the latest edition of the “Startling Stats” fact sheet, detailing new data on the crisis at the southwest border.
- CBP encountered 178,622 individuals at the southwest border in April 2021, the highest number in a single month in over 20 years, and a 944% increase compared to April 2020.
- Since January 2021, CBP has encountered 531,533 individuals along the southwest border. During the same time frame in 2020, CBP encountered 124,838 individuals.
- Heroin seizures increased 97% from March 2021 and fentanyl seizures increased 34%. In FY21 so far, fentanyl seizures have already surpassed those from all of FY20, with 6,494 pounds through April 2021 compared to 4,776 pounds for all of FY20.
- In FY21 to date, CBP has arrested 5,861 individuals with criminal convictions – more than double the number arrested in all of FY20.
